ohio field school program, Ohio state university (2016-2021)

I co-created the Ohio Field School, an integrated service-learning course, archival collection, and collaborative ethnographic initiative, with Dr. Katherine Borland at the Ohio State University.

Major contributions:

  • Co-created a community-focused and responsive organizational structure, which included the creation of an OSU Advisory Committee (comprised primarily of Ohio Field School alumni) and Community Partner Advisory Committee (comprised of diverse partners).

  • Co-authored donor proposals and grant proposals, raising over $300,000 to jumpstart and sustain the project from 2016-2021.

  • Co-created and co-taught the Ohio Field School course (5189-S) at Ohio State University (2017, 2018, 2018, 2021) and served as Archival Liaison (2020, 2021).

  • Created and managed the Ohio Field School Collection, an archival database and finding aid that reflects five years of collaborative and team-based fieldwork. Managed the distribution and access of materials and coordinated local access points for the collection in Scioto County.

  • Oversaw the creation of several digital galleries, student-produced public-facing multimedia projects.

  • Oversaw the Placemaking in Scioto County, Ohio traveling exhibit and worked with community partners at Shawnee State University to make the Ohio Field School Collection available online through Digital Commons@Shawnee and co-led Placemaking 2.0: Place-Based Curriculum with Susan Eleuterio (Independent Folklorist and Educational Specialist), a repurposing of the Placemaking in Scioto County, Ohio traveling exhibit for K-12 curriculum during the pandemic.

  • Co-authored The Ohio Field School: A Collaborative Model for University-Community Research with Dr. Katherine Borland and Dr. Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth (open access).

  • Co-authored the ASCENT Magazine feature story on the Ohio Field School.

As a co-PI for the Appalachian Water Research Exchange (AWaRE), an interdisciplinary team of scholars and community partners engaged in community-based participatory water quality research and action, I provide input on equitable strategies for university-community collaborations. This project is funded by a seed grant from the Sustainability Institute at Ohio State University.
